Bird Banding

Jordan and I went to the Kalamazoo Nature Center today. We walked around a bit and came upon a group of people catching birds in nets and then banding them and letting them go. We watched them band a downy woodpecker and a red eyed vireo. They had about 6 little cloth bags with birds squirming around inside them. Oh how I wanted to look in all those bags and see every one of those birds up close.
They let Jordan release the vireo. It was pretty neat and I was really envious watching them. As we were walking away Jordan said "Mom, you need a job like that."

Oh how neat, Jessica... That little bird is just adorable. I'm sure that Jordan enjoyed herself.

We've enjoyed great temps/weather down here also...

Happy Belated Birthday to your Dad. Great painting.

Hope you have a great weekend.
Hugs,
Betsy

How do they catch them to band them? Half the time they don't sit still long enough for a picture! ha!

Jen... We didn't get to see them catching them. They were already in the little cloth bags by the time we showed up. But from what I understand they use nets to catch them. Not like a little butterflys net but big nets that they hang out in fields and woods. They set the nets up and then check them every few hours. The birds get trapped in them somehow. I'd like to see more of it.
